Description
Blackwood Projects undertook the reconstruction and restoration of the State Heritage-listed Ipswich Signal Cabin at the Queensland Museum Rail Workshops. Originally located within the Ipswich Central Railway Yards, the three-storey timber structure had been dismantled into three major sections and placed in storage prior to its relocation.
The works involved detailed 3D scanning, temporary structural strengthening, staged transport through the operational Queensland Rail Workshops, crane lifting and precision alignment of the three sections onto new supports. Extensive structural and timber repairs were undertaken to address termite damage, dry rot and deterioration identified progressively as the building was opened up.
Heritage works included conservation and reinstatement of original building fabric, chamferboards, windows, doors, verandahs, external timber stairs, periscopes and historic signalling equipment. Associated works included new foundations and paths, roofing, lead-paint remediation, painting, electrical and communications services, fire management works and landscaping.
Close coordination with Queensland Rail, Queensland Museum, heritage stakeholders and engineers was required throughout to protect irreplaceable heritage fabric while resolving latent structural conditions.
